How to Get Paid for Writing on Medium (for non-US residents)

By joining the Medium Partner Program you can get paid for your writings. Setting up an account is free from financial costs. It is a low-treshold method for earning your first coins from writing.

There are three parties involved that require your attention. Each will cost you about 2 to 8 minutes to plough through.

The Medium Platform

When logged in to your Medium account you can click on your profile picture. A dropdown menu will appear.

In the dropdown menu look for “Medium Partner Program”.

In the dropdown menu click the text “Medium Partner Program”

A new page will appear (else go to https://medium.com/creators). Scroll down and click on the green button that says “Join the Medium Partner Program”.

Click on the green button that says “Join the Medium Partner Program”.

Setting up Stripe Payment Gateway

For now the quickest way is to set up an express account unless you already have a Stripe account. More information can be found on Medium’s help site.

Fill in your information and phone number. You will receive a verification code by SMS. Enter this code.

Now you can enter a business website or name.

Lastly, by entering an IBAN there will be an endpoint to receive earnings. It supports debit accounts and bank accounts in GBP, EUR, and several other currencies.

Set up a Stripe Express account. You can always change the type of account later.

Submit Taxpayer Information

Click “Medium Partner Program” again.

Now there’s a new button that says “Submit taxpayer information”. Click the button.

Click the text “Submit taxpayer information”

For non-US residents you most likely will have to fill out the tax form W-8BEN.

Fill in the Tax Identification Number (TIN) number for non-US residents, or leave it blank for now. Just make sure to update it within one month to be eligible for payments. You can find the TIN on your identification card, passport, or driving license. More information on where to find the TIN code is on this website.

When you have diligently worked through all texts and fields it is time to round up. Type your name and email-address to confirm that you have supplied all the information with all honesty to the best of your knowledge.

Back to the Medium Platform

Click in the dropdown menu “Medium Partner Program” again to verify your status. If no highlighted buttons appear you are all set up.

Now, publish your good stuff within the Medium Partner Program. Earn your first few cents and call yourself a beginning professional writer.
